A mom recently asked in our Facebook Group, “what are your “hacks” for getting in workouts when you have little kids?”. You may think I gave her some tips like “block your calendar”, “get up early”, “prioritize your time better”. Those are all definitely things we can think about, but as a busy mom with a kiddo, a full (and unpredictable) schedule, and a full time job, I have a bit of a different take on this question.
EXPECTATIONS
One of the hacks to getting workouts in as a mom may be sometimes lowering your expectations…
Expectations that a “good workout” has to take an hour.
Expectations that a “good workout” has to be perfect or look a certain way.
In fact, a good workout can absolutely be accomplished in 20 minutes. You just have to be more strategic with your movement selection and focus. A good workout doesn’t mean you have to be at the gym. We have lots of moms in our programs that get in really effective workouts at home, including me 😉
Some days, the stars align and you get an hour in or you get to the gym for a class.
Other days, a 5 minute walk or mobility routine may be all you can get in, and that’s ok.
Maybe you go for a 20 minute walk. We always encourage our moms to shorten our workouts if needed, and give options for how to do that.
TIME IS PRECIOUS
In this season where you feel like you can’t fit it all in, do what you can.
- Ask for help.
- Join a program that will help you be more efficient in your workouts (hi, we can help!)
- Break your workouts up into smaller blocks
- Change your mindset around what a “good workout” means
